Not only do many women become homeless due to family violence , homelessness can expose them to further gendered violence. Research shows homeless women experience violence — or feel vulnerable to it — in crisis accommodation, such as private rooming houses and motels, to which housing services often refer them due to the scarcity of more suitable alternatives. For my recently published book I interviewed 15 women aged about their experiences of managing homelessness in Melbourne. The women described how the poverty, social exclusion and physical danger that accompany homelessness required them to manage their circumstances with very few resources. Lack of money, welfare support and social capital meant, for some, their only resource was to exchange sex for somewhere to stay.

Sex and relationships on the street: How homeless men judge partner risk on Skid Row
High-risk sexual behavior — sex with partners who have sexually transmitted infections without taking measures to prevent infection — is the second leading contributor to the burden of disease globally [ 4 ]. It is generally accepted that male condoms are the most efficient and effective technology against the spread of HIV and other sexually transmitted infections [ 5 ]. However, rates of male condom use are much lower than necessary to prevent the spread of infection and improvements in interventions to promote condom use are needed in order for the potential of condoms to be realized [ 6 ]. In the United States, certain populations are more at risk for HIV than others, such as homeless populations [ 7 , 8 ]. Homeless persons typically reside in poor urban areas where rates of HIV infection, drug use, needle use, and sexual risk behavior are high [ 9 — 13 ]. Unprotected heterosexual contact is a key route of HIV transmission in the United States [ 14 ] and men who self-identify as heterosexual make up the majority of homeless populations in large urban areas [ 8 ].

The Canadian Observatory on Homelessness is the largest national research institute devoted to homelessness in Canada. This study provides a detailed examination of the sex trade-related attitudes and behaviors of homeless men by: 1 determining the prevalence of sex trade-related behaviors, including sex with female sex workers FSWs ; 2 identifying risk factors for having sex with FSWs; and 3 comparing men's relationships with FSWs and non-FSWs in terms of relationship qualities and HIV-related risk behaviors, such as condom use. Structured interviews were conducted with a probability sample of heterosexually active homeless men recruited from meal lines in Los Angeles.
